I've had it since I was kid. I received a prescribtion for PROVENTIL (albuterol sulfate) to help open my airways. Since it is a muscle spasm and usually a reaction to something irritating, I think the only natural way is to find the offending cause (ie pollen) and try to reduce it as much as possible. Obviously, easier said than done.

Albuterol for quickies, and Asthmacort for preventative. I quit smoking cigs in Nov 06, after that my asthma pretty much went away unless I'm around cats. I might have to take a shot of Albuterol about 1 time a week, if that.

My asthma is triggered by strongly by cats and mildly by dogs. If I can't breath, I take my Albuterol and that's all I take. My use varies, maybe 4 times a month on average, but it's never really bad; just a little clogged.
If I get bad I need to go to the doctor for some steroids and a ZPAK

I'm not sure what Asthma is like, but since it has to do with breathing, I'm sure it's pretty dangerous to let it be out of control, and it concerns me that a person has to go without medicine because they can't afford it :grr:
So I did some research, and the company Glaxo-Smith Kline who produces advair have a patient assistance program. I called them and inquired. They said they have several different options, depending on your particular situations. She said either way.. you'll get this advair cheap or even Free.
Call this number: 888-477-2669
or Go To: www.pparx.org
This company searches for you.. You tell them the drug, they find it for you for Free or low cost.
or www.gskforyou.com
This company actually makes Advair, and has assistance programs.
to call 866-475-3678
They will hellp match you with the proper company to get you the drug Cheap or Free, whichever you need.
Good Luck

Yes I do,...in the midwest... and I've heard of asthma.. as a matter of fact, my husband (jacx) just told me he used to suffer it when he was younger :|
I just never experienced it or knew anyone with it.
And as far as the united states and health/medicine.. I do know what you're saying. 2 years ago when my Mom suffered from lung cancer.. it was incredible how much trouble she had getting things paid for , even by some of her insurance. During her treatment, me and my sister and our brother paid 200 bux apiece PER WEEK (600.00 a week) .. for her vitamin C injections and her other nutritionist...simply because her insurance considered it "alternative treatment" and it wasn't covered. Yea well.. she is still cancer free to this day.. so obviously it was the right thing to do, with or without their coverage. However, unfortunately, a person who couldn't afford that kind of money would have just had to go without it.
I'm sure you'll be able to get that medicine free... be sure to call them!! :Friends:

I've had asthma since I was like 6...and though it has gotten a lot better, it still messes with me.
I currently take albuterol as needed.
A friend gets me samples of Advair, which is the best so far, of all the drugs I've tried, since it's fairly expensive, and I'm not eligible for Ins yet. I have used just about everything on the market, singulair was good for me, but once I got the advair, that was by far the best.
I have found some success with a couple things here, for starters...don't laugh, but making sure I blow my nose at night before I go to bed, and simply breathing through my nose more...secondly, I've been sleeping further down on the bed, but still with a pillow, simply not to constrict my airways at night while I sleep, I have a bad habit of falling asleep sitting up, and inevitably my head falls down, making breathing very hard, lastly I drink black coffee occasionally, you don't have to drink a lot, just a little, something about the aroma actually relaxes your lungs. I haven't used my rescue inhaler/albuterol in 7 days now, and I ran out of my advair over a month ago, so it's helping a lot. I still wake up with a little bit of asthma at night, but if you've ever studied martial arts, then you may know about controlled breathing, that's basically just relaxing yourself, to allow your breathing to regulate, that also helps, but it took me a long time to barely be able to do that.
certain animals flare my asthma up instantly, most don't though anymore.
I hope some of this helps.
Oh yeah, and I still smoke like a chimney, about a pack a day...

Yeah, I tinker with the idea, now and then..for the most part I'm just not ready too, but I was just thinking about it, a few days ago, believe it or not, I do appreciate your post though. I have noticed a difference in my health, I've smoked now, for a little over 5 years.

I'm confused, I know it all comes down to personal preference, but why would anyone with breathing problems smoke? :dunno:
Surely that's a really daft thing to do? Or am I way off the mark here?

You asked about possible Natural Remedies for asthma. I have not checked this site out thoroughly, and it does appear to have a whole lot of advertising to wade through in getting to the actual information. Not all remedies are created equal, and never change your prescribed routine without first consulting a medical professional.
http://www.ayurvediccure.com/home-remedies/asthma.htm
excerpt:
One of the proven home remedy for asthma is take 1 tablespoon of water and 2 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. Take this mixture everyday and nights twice a day.
Honey is considered as one of the good and breakthrough home remedies for asthma. It is said that if a jug of honey under the nose of the person suffering from asthma, he will be benefited with the air inhaled which is coming from the honey. This effect may last long about an hour. The honey can be taken internally also. This could be with either milk or with plain water. It liquefies the accumulated phlegm from the respiratory track and thins out the accumulated mucus. In this way, it clears the respiratory track giving easy breathe to the patient.
If by chance you suffer from allergies as well...hot teas with lemon and honey sound like a good bet. Green tea is good in the morning, because it has caffeine, but chamomile is better for bedtime, unless you are allergic to ragweed of course. Celestial Seasonings has a tea with chamomile in it called "Sleepytime Tea".
http://www.ayurvediccure.com/home-remedies/allergies.htm
excerpt:
The green tea or the common table tea has natural capacity to block the over secretion of histamine. One can have one to two cups a day with honey. Instead of the green tea, one can replace that by having black tea. It is not reported as effective as green tea, but for sometimes this can be used as substitute.
Both links include many other home remedies for allergies and for asthma. Here is the link to the main site for you to check out...and by all means, check out any alternative remedies with your physician and your pharmacist for possible side effects and drug interactions.

QVAR is a fairly low priced inhaled steroid for maintenance taken 1-2 puffs am and 1-2 puffs pm with albuterol being used as needed. For those of you that maybe took Vanceril in the past, it is now called QVAR.
Also, consuming 8-10 8 oz glasses of water daily help keep mucous thin, as asthma is a combination of increased mucous production and bronchial constriction. Triggers are outdoor pollution as well as pets and cold. Now a days indoor pollution is worse then outdoor so a good year round allergy pill will help as well. Claritin over the counter is cheap (just look for loratadine, which is claritin). Can be picked up at dollar stores in the U.S.
I have had asthma from childhood and have been thru the diff meds with this combo being the most effective for me.
Please call around and see what you can do because you are using your rescue inhaler way too much. If you cannot keep your bronchioles open properly with maintenance meds, you collapse them and eventually the alveoli, which are the small air sacs, collapse, harden and die, turning to scar tissue thus decreasing your ability to breathe. Dont mean to scare you and I know what your saying about cost and such but get them calls out and see if you can get some freebies and reduced rates.
Also, even if you dont think you have allergies, you do with asthma so get that over the counter loratadine.
