It's the most startling news to hit the heavy-metal circuit since Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat.

The wizard of the Ozzfest is going back on the road this summer and this time the tickets to his 25-city tour will be free.

'It's our 12th year and we wanted to shake it up a bit and do something different,' Osbourne's wife, Sharon, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Ticket prices for Ozzfest, which have ranged from $35 to $150, were beginning to rise beyond the reach of the rocker's loyal fans, his wife said, and he didn't want that to happen.

'It's not saying that I'm now Mother Teresa or that Ozzy is a saint, but you know what? He's been doing this a long time and his audience has been really good to him,' Sharon Osbourne said. 'So if he goes out one summer of his life and he doesn't get paid, big deal.'

Osbourne has been wooing corporate sponsors to cover the cost of the tour. So far, his wife said, six have signed up.

The tour kicks off July 7 in Los Angeles, with stops planned in San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Dallas, New York, St. Louis and several other cities. A final list of dates and stops is still in the works.

Organizers haven't revealed yet who will be joining Osbourne on stage, but his wife said she hopes it will include numerous special guests who will drop in for one or two shows.

Over the years, Ozzfest has showcased a number of up-and-coming bands, including Linkin Park, Incubus and System of a Down.

I was thinking of coming back to the Ozzfest this year for the fifth time after I skipped it last year. But what I don't get is how they plan on managing crowds of 100k or more people who will surely turn up to a free show like this?

And its true, I paid over $100 the last two times for decent main stage seats. Got my money's worth though :)

I just wonder if he'll be able to book any decent talent for the tour without paying them. Ozzy may be rich enough to play a free tour, but most bands couldn't afford to do that.

First of all there should not be any bitching about a free show, no matter the lineup.

I think we should expect to see mostly up and coming bands that could use national exposure and will get the backing of their labels. Don't expect to see repeat of 2004 lineup, with the likes of Slayer and Judas Priest, but I hope that a couple of well known bands will chip-in their services and do the tour for free as well. Also many bands might drop by for a date or two if they cross their paths with the Ozzfest on their summer tours, so lineups will definitely vary from date to date.

As for the tickets, this is what the official web-site says:
To gain entry into the event, fans will go to www.ozzfest.com or www.livenation.com to find links that will direct them to special sponsor sites where tickets can be secured. More details regarding the process are forthcoming.
Sounds to me like get a gallon of Jager or Budweiser (God forbid) and get a ticket for free.

the bands wouldn't be doing it for free, with corporate sponsors, there's obviously something in it for the bands, and that's not even getting into merchandising.

That was the word I was hearing. Supposedly they came up with some major sponsership money this year. Good for them for not taking the money and adding it to their stash they would have received in ticket revenue. There has been plenty of huge tours with big sponsorship money before..... but none of those were free.

lol they are the perfect example. I'd never pay the prices they ask. But for a reasonable price I'm willing to go see a lot of bands. I realize that hardly any of them at all make their money off of album sales (even before free downloads). Its the touring that ensures their kids never have to work a day in their lives as well as pay for their rehab. Sponsors, ticket sales, and t-shirts is where its at for them. Especially if its one main artist and not a full on band to divide the dough around to
