A week of negotiations later, and a record £26.5million in transfer fees, and Athletico and Spanish International Striker Fernando Torres is set to sign a 6 year contract at the premiership giants keeping him there until 2013.

Torres, who was highly regarded by several clubs throughout the continenet including Chelsea, Man Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan, passed his medical at Liverpool's Melwood training ground, yesterday afternoon and will smash the clubs existing transfer fee.

Life long Athletico fan Torres scored 14 goals last season in the spanish top flight, La Liga, finishing 8th overall behind top goalscorer Ruud Van Nistelrooy on 25.

However 14 goals last season in the Premiership would have secured a joint 4th highest scorer with Man Utd's Wayne Rooney with Chelseas Didier Drogba winning the golden boot with 18.

The club will be holding a press conference at 3pm as Torres is unveiled to the media and an exclusive interview with the clubs website is undertaken.

Just a shame it's like comparing a melon to a bus.

Either way though, it's a good signing so maybe Liverpool can challenge for the league now.
