Go to uTorrent.com (http://www.utorrent.com)
Download the free version.
Go to a torrent site like torrentspy (http://www.torrentspy.com) or btjunkie (http://btjunkie.org/) and search for a file you want to download.
Once you have a screen full of your search results look for the program/song/video etc you want. The higher a result is in the list, the more people have downloaded it and are likely to be sharing it.
The name of the torrent is usually the torrent link, Click on it to begin the torrent download process.
uTorrent will automatically open and show you what its about to download. Just press OK without changing anything.(I believe by default Utorrent downloads to your 'My documents' directory.)
The download will start automatically. Sit back and watch.
After the file is downloaded, leave it open in the program to share with other people who are also trying to get the same file. Note this is usually a must when you start using private torrent sites.

Tips

If the download isn't ready when you need to turn the PC off, just exit your torrent client and turn off the PC. When You start it again, reopening the client should restart the torrent. I usually have Utorrent in my start up so it always restarts in case my machine is rebooted because of an update.
There are other torrent clients (programs) that can be used such as Azureus or BitComet. I like Utorrent because its not a big resource hog.

Warnings

Torrents can slow your computer down when you are downloading!
Be careful not to get caught when downloading copyright protected software/music.
Keep your anti-virus program and its definitions fully up-to-date, downloaded software from 'sharing' sources is high risk for infections. Trust me on that one!
SLOWS DOWN YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION WHEN DOWNLOADING, especially if your upload maxes out your total upload speed. You can prevent this by double-clicking on the Torrent in U-Torrent and throttling its upload and/or download speed.

I cribbed this how to but updated it a bit too. I hope it helps.

Go to a torrent site like torrentspy (http://www.torrentspy.com) or btjunkie (http://btjunkie.org/) and search for a file you want to download.

uTorrent actually has it's own search in the top right corner which is handy.

There are also widgets for Opera and add-ons for Firefox to search torrent sites.

I think you should add this site there...

TorrentScan (http://torrentscan.com)

this is all in one to do search torrent sites.. it covers almost all the free top torrent sites

little tips

the More Seeders for the torrent is better speed you can get

and where sharing you file as in seeding you must share the ratio of 1:1

Seeding Means = Uploading/sharing

What's the latest on the torrent sites spying on us? I've been told that Pirate Bay (I think) has been forced through the courts to track IP, MAC and other info of its users, presumably to be made available to third parties to enable prosecution etc.

I haven't heard anything in regards to that.

Unfortunately Dy, I got the site wrong, it is in fact Torrentspy:

So it seems as the spying hasn't started but it is obviously something that we need to be aware for the future.

This whole subject is something I'd really like to get clued up on. Not just to e able to d/l stuff without the fear of come back, more importantly to me is the fact that I just find the whole idea of people being able to btain info bout me without my consent really irritating on principle.

Anyways, I suppose it would require firstly knowing what information we provide when we use the net and also what information entities out there on the WWW can obtain without our knowing it.

I know that we provide an IP address and a MAC address pretty much my default.

Then of course cookies can be used to obtain further info. I dont know if these are needed for torrent sites tho.

There is some other stuff whch i can't remember.

I'd like to know what else there is.

Anyways, your IP address can be pretty easily hidden from normal web sites by using a proxy. However, proxies are a bit hit and miss. Torpark is good though but can be slow. I don't know if these work against torrents tho as utorrent is a program not a web site akthough I suppose it all starts by searchin a torrent web site..

The-cloak-com is pretty good and and can encrypt your browsing but has a very limited bandwith quota unless you pay, and again I don't know how to make it work through softare like utorrent. Thier unlimted pay service costs 1.7 cents per megabyte!

The MAC address seems more problematic. The only way I know to hide this is through one piece of software that is not free: http://www.hide-my-ip.com/hidemymacaddress.shtml it costs $19.95.

That's about as much as I know.

If some one can tell me all the info provided by our PCs and all the info obtainable I'd be happy to investigate.

*edit* aha stp press!!!

Any further info as to what to look for/into still appreciated though.

Well your MAC address is generated by your NIC and your Router. To be honest its fairly useless unless they subpoena your ISP to provide a name connected to it.
