It'd never been too late to bring back up this thread....
As Carlos mentioned, but going a step even further, Walsh was and even in death still the most revolutionary coach in NFL history. The man's coaching family tree fills half the league today and that isn't even the beginning of it.
Walsh got his start coaching a shitty no talent Eagles team in the late 60's/early 70's. The man realized quickly that he was never going to win with the talent he had under any normal strategy. He then developed what later became known as the West Coast offence (yeah it started in Philly). He managed to win games with those talentless teams and nearly 10 years later he was given the head coaching job at San Fran. He again took over a terrible team and as we all know, he lead them on one of the greatest runs in pro sports history.
Every time you watch an NFL game and you see trivial things like a short dump off to a running back, a short quick slant to a wide out or a short quick in/out/button hook that's all stuff that was far from common place in the NFL before Walsh. Passing on 1st down or even passing as much as you run, unheard of before Walsh. Going 3 wide in short yardage situations, he made it popular.
The man did more for the NFL than can ever really stated here. Just know, that without a doubt, the NFL that you watch today and love and basically every game, has his imprint on it. Whether the team is a west coast offense team or not. The league wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for him and could very well still be in the dark age in terms of high powered offenses, throwing the ball heavily and scoring tons of points.
