Here is a traditional recipe from my hometown :)

Don't forget to put a lot of cream, that is what make the pie so good!
In the real traditional recipe there is no beacon inside the pie (it was a veggie pie and was supposed to be eaten on Friday) but adding beacon is not so bad.

Damn Shea, making me hungry. Looks like you never had a Pasty considering you are from Michigan. Traditional Finnish/euro anglo pasty's have meat, potato, and onion covered by a pastry. Some ppl add carrot's and Rutabaga. Yumm with a nice beef reduction.

Shanna... you can use any pumpkin pie recipe and exchange sweet potatoes for the pumpkin... Also my mom always used Butternut squash for alot of sweet potato or pumpkin recipes...such as pumpkin bread, pies, etc...
Mom's sweet potato pie recipe I got for you:
1 1/2 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2 inch pieces
2 large eggs
1/3 cup brown sugar
3 Tbsp maple syrup
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3/4 cup heavy cream or evaporated milk
1 pre-baked pie crust
Boil the potatoes until tender. When you stick a
fork in them it should go in easy but you don't
want them to fall apart.
Let the potatoes cool and then peel them.
Put the potatoes in a large mixing bowl and
mash them thoroughly with a potatoe masher.
In another bowl:
Mix all other ingredients
Then stir this mixture into the mashed potatoes until well mixed.
Pour the potatoes mixture
into the crust.
Put into an oven preheated to 375 degrees.
Cook for about 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick
inserted in the center comes out dry.
*Top with your pecans before baking if u use pecans
*u can use cool whip after pie is baked and cooled too
*or u can put meringue on top of the pie before baking

Meat Pies
Also... our typical store bought pot pies are a sorry excuse for meat pies. Meat pies are very popular in Europe and Australia. Nothing beats a homeade meat pie, you can use beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, pork... Any combination of vegetables, herbs and spices of your choice.
When John and I make it.. we use the store bought already made pie crust..and roll it out kinda thin, then line the pan (oblong 9x13 cake pan) with one, and use the other for the top. Set this aside and make your stew.
We make a homeade stew...with meat (I prefer beef), boullion, onions, carrots, parsnips, celery, potatoes, peas, corn, garlic, dark red kidney beans, etc... (make it thick and rich) (to thicken it use either bisto, or a cornstarch/water mix) Pour about a 1/2 cup of Port wine into your stew while its simmering...this makes it mega rich. The herbs we use are mainly salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder and Thyme (doesnt taste the same without thyme), and u can use a pinch of fennel if u like it. If you make a chicken or turkey, or lamb, be sure to use some rosemary and a tiny bit of dry mint too. I also use spanish smoked paprika in the stew.. and make sure you have good stock or boulion to make it rich. Simmer your stew so the meat and veggies are tender.
Then just pour your stew into the pie shell... put the top on and pinch the edges...then using a knife make several small slits in the top crust.
Then bake on 350 for about an hour ish..or till crust is golden and filling is bubbly.
We usually serve it with a fresh salad.
Meat pies, if made right, are delicious. :P
You'll never eat a store bought frozen pot pie again!
