Friends of a 13-year-old girl slain in Spotsylvania County yesterday are trying to raise money to pay for her funeral.
Kayla Reynolds' neighbors and local businesses have been asked to contribute to a memorial fund set up to pay for the service and burial costs. She was shot in the head on her front porch early Tuesday morning.
Her pregnant 19-year-old half-sister was also shot, but survived the wound to her face. She underwent surgery on her chin at VCU Medical Center and she is expected to live, Sheriff Howard Smith said.
After Kayla's father, Earl Wayne "Butch" Reynolds, was charged with murder, friends realized the remaining family could not afford the funeral, said Michelle Gonzales, a neighbor on Belfonte Street in Spotsylvania.
Gonzales said the memorial fund money, managed by Found and Sons, will be given to the family to pay for the service.
A representative from Found and Sons said they are not yet sure of details, but more information will be available sometime today.
They also do not yet know how much money is needed for the fund, Gonzales said.
Kayla Reynolds' mother passed away about three years ago, according to friends.
Meanwhile, Butch Reynolds will be in court today on other charges. He was previously charged with driving while intoxicated and driving without a license. He did not show up to court the first time and was jailed before he was released on bond and told to show up today on the charges, Smith said.
Several neighbors have come forward to say they thought that Kayla was being abused and called Social Services.
Social Services in Spotsylvania has not returned multiple phone calls and Smith said he does not know of any criminal record Reynolds has involving child abuse.

I think it is very generous that everyone is taking up money for Kayla's funeral and I will as well but I also feel that Social Services should put forth their $.02 as well, being that they had numerous complantes and nothing was done. The reason that they are not returning the press phone calls is because they all have to have a meeting to get their lies strait, so the blame will fall on someone else, Like I said yesterday hire more people! There are plenty of people with caring hearts out there.

This is a sad moment for a child's life a to be taken because the proper help wasn't given, when asked. I hope that this opens alot of eyes for everyone. Kayla had so much to conquer in the days and years ahead of her, now she is conquering life a new way, she is trouble-free no more drama. To her sister prayer is powerful, I know that you are in pain, but pray and you will pull thru. To the family I pray with you and for you. To the father I pray for you and I hope you realize drugs isn;t the answer.

My heart goes out to those neighbors who tried to help by calling SS, I have been in that position in Caroline County and I did keep trying. I even went to court on the issue and the court system ruled in favor os SS. I am sure they did all they could do. The system is in the hands ,most of the time, of people who are there just to get a paycheck and the welfare of the kids is not the main concern. It is indeed a horrible situation. Neighbors don't feel guilty you did all you could do. SS WAKE UP..

I have a question....If neighbors are now coming forth about calling CPS and getting no results, why didn't any of you keep pushing the issue? If you don't feel that your efforts are being acknowledged and achieved then keep trying. I'm not laying blame on those who called...at least you tried. We as a society need to become more involved. Scream to the rafters if need be. The system can't be fixed if we don't demand that it be fixed. My prayers go out to those who loved Kayla. And to Kayla..rest easy now.
