View Full Version : Free up RAM

Came across a lovely little free program recently - Rambooster 2.0 (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Memory-Tweak/Rambooster-Bilton.shtml).
If you've got programs sitting there having reserved RAM but not using it, this grabs it back from them. Particularly effective against Firefox's memory leak....

Firefox has a memory leak?

maybe leak isn't the right word, but it doesn't let go of ram very readily.

there's some setting you can add to the about:config to make firefox free up the memory upon minimizing it

As you say - http://www.solo-technology.com/blog/2005/12/23/quick-firefox-tweak-free-mem/
...then you just have to remember to minimize instead of atl+tab. It works quite well, drops mem usage to about 25% on minimize, then it goes back up to about 50% when you maximize again.
The other option is to restart. Chrome Edit Plus (http://webdesigns.ms11.net/chromeditp.html) puts a restart button on the toolbar.

If your looking to free up memory...
Most people can start by killing all of those applications they are not using (and probably never will use) in their taskbar.
Would it really kill people to fire up yahoo im or msn when they actually plan to use it rather than having it start with windows?
Do you really need your Sun java virtual machine, quicktime, and god knows what other programs starting with windows just so they can sit open and constantly check some website to see if by chance there might be an update (that probably will make performance worse once it's installed)?
There are many tweaks out there to help free up a bit of memory here and there, but if you want your pc to run more efficiently, then start by killing un-used start up applications.
Also, clearing the millions of icons off of your desktop will help your system load much quicker too. If you really need those icons, create an empty folder on the desktop and drag them all into it. Loading a single icon takes far less time.
Oh yea... one more thing... AOL is like the plague for a computer.

Quoted again because really can you say AOL is a piece of shit often enough?

Ya gotta love the fact that they set you up with an handy uninstaller to remove their crap... but then there is now way to uninstall the uninstaller.
And if you look around after it has been "uninstalled"... you will find that AOL still lurks in way too many places in the registry.

Its funny cause I worked for them about 12 years ago as a Support Supervisor. They laid me off because they started asking ALOT from the employees and instead of nodding and going OK I started questioning their reasoning. Next thing I know I'm being told 'your management style doesn't fit the way the company is moving in the future'. Looking back it was the best compliment ever LOL My only regret was the stock options. Had I been able to keep them, if I would have cashed out during the Time/AOL merger I would have been a millionaire.

I remember it, never used it though.
I got the free AOL account because I had bought a lifetime QLink account on my commodore (well, my dad bought it). then it got transfered to an AOL account

good times good times! I was thinking about the how the flame war me and Tung got going used to pale in comparison to those on the Bulletin Board Systems in the 80s. Back then there were no spectators. You picked a side and you threw yourself into the fray.
Ah me, my C64 and the 300 baud modem.. The fun times we had. I remember one time when I was war-dialing and the damn modem somehow dialed 911! Hear a knock at the door, open it up and its two cops. Luckily they were clueless back then.

Nice Post, Firefox Is My Favorite Browser. But It Does Need To Let Go Of RAM, It's Always Freezing My Computer, And The Fact My PC Is Nearly 5 Years Old Doesn't Help. Oh Well Building A New One Soon :)
Thanks!
