so i tried to change some settings on my computer and it said something along the lines of: Access denied: you must be logged on using an administrator account to make these changes.
this confused me as there is only one account on this computer and having gone to: control panel > user accounts > it tells me the account is the "Computer Administrator".......... so why can i not make these settings changes, any ideas??

you actually need to log on under the "administrator" log in...
that will be the username, and the password will be whatever it is you set it as
(if you have the xp log on screen where you click the name and then a password screen comes up... you need to change your start up options to the windows classic log on in order to enter in your own user name...)

3 years? That must be top record for a common user. I'm using Win2K3 for 4 years and have reinstalled it 3 or 4 times. Use more portable apps and reinstalling of the whole system won't be pain.

damn can you reset the admin password from another account with admin rights? If so you might need to do that.. and Jay is right (wow he's handsome and smart LOL) in Pro it probably does want the local administrator login since you've probably never put this machine on a domain.

boot into safe mode and make yourself a new Admin account there.
(tap F8 repeatedly when you turn on the computer, select Safe Mode when you have the option, then I think you go to User Accounts in Control Panel)

If you have problems remembering the password for any of the accounts with admin rights... don't stress off of it too much.
There is an easy way to reset the passwords of any of the current accounts on your system, but you will need access to CD burner.
Just download this file (http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/cd070409.zip).
It's a zipped ISO file of an easy to use bootable linux disk.
It works like a charm for resetting passwords in win2k, xp, & vista.
For more info on this... check out this site (http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/).
(so just how secure is windows again?)

slight side track off the thread, but judging on the number of high scores you have in the arcade, your forum name couldn't be more ironic :D
