...the silent-birth doctrine holds that children should be delivered in an atmosphere of total quiet, without any groans, screams, or sounds of pain from the mother, or even the audible exchange of information among hospital personnel.
In his book Preventive Dianetics, Hubbard elaborates on the goal of this practice: Apparently pretending to all concerned that pushing a human being out your coochie is not only painless, but downright relaxing, will "save both the sanity of the mother and the child and safeguard the home to which they will go." Furthermore, L. Ron goes on to admonish, "the maintaining of silence does not mean a volley of 'sh's,' for those make stammerers." After a delivery that's "as calm and no-talk as possible," the baby should "be wrapped somewhat tightly in a warm blanket, very soft, and then left alone for a day or so." This strategy of non-care may be convenient for parents with promotional junkets and postpartum photo-ops to attend, but it sounds like a real can't-have for the poor kid stuck in the between-lives area.

An explanation of Scientology on the official website - i've only got to chapter 2, but it's worth reading. It's the first time I've heard/read anything concrete about it, and I think there might be something in it...seriously.

Well of course there might be something of merit in there. There's always things that tend to make sense in any religion. That's part of what makes any religion attractive to people. If they couldn't relate to it in some ways, they'd never join. That's likely to be partially why all of the "truth" that Scientology believes in aren't revealed to the newest members. They're only introduced to those that have a "higher ranking." In fact low ranking members are instructed to believe that if you learn too much about Scientology before your level allows you to learn it, you can die.

Don't know much about it, but I would have expected more of a religion which name derives from the word SCIENCE.
I think it's bullshit, that whole scam between Cruise and Shields of post birth depression.....drugs are science, and their goal is to make our body feel better and work fine. (drug abuse is something else...)

Did anybody watch the credits of South Park in the Scientology episode? They were so afraid of being sued they all used fake names..
I'm amazed that Scientology has so much money they can bully all the anti-scientology sites to shut down.

the thing that i don't understand is the "no talking to the child for a week" to me that seems like semi child abuse. i was recently a labor coach for an all natural childbirth. (yikes!) the baby came out crying his little lungs out. and continued to cry through cleaning him up. when he was given to his mother and she started singing to him, he stopped crying and just snuggled right into her. i think that a parent's voice is the most comforting thing for a new born.
and please don't even get me started about the "no psych drugs" thing. i sat with a guy whose's "voices" told him to poke his own eyes out and he did. he was off his psych meds and was completely crazy. but according to Tom who "has read the history of psychiatry" all the guy needed was "sunshine and vitamins" please Tom, come explain that to the guys family.

It's such a shame - from what I read on the site the ideas behind it are really quite nice and fluffy and make sense in a strange sort of way - and then they fuck it up by being extorting money out of people, having seriously stupid rules, and generally being wankstains.
Oh, and I don't think the name does derive from 'science' (I can't remember who said that earlier in the thread) - it derives from the same root as it, and means 'the philosophy of truth' or something along those lines.

surely if it makes him happy and stuff then i dont see the fuss - only because Mr Cruise is open about his faith does he get ridiculed....you dont see John Travola getting hassled and his beliefs are the same.

Tom Cruise Slams Brooke Shields
said alot of news agencies. slamming is not being open, not in my book anyway.
he's not being open. he is bashing people openly for using drugs to treat mental health issues. and mr cruise who has no medical training what so ever has the nerve to belittle a person for using drugs that actually help them. stating that "You can use vitamins to help a woman through those things."
Scientologists have a deep-seated hatred of everything associated with psychiatry — not just the stereotypical psychiatric counseling, but also any medication designed to treat mental disorders. They reject the "science" behind this in favor of teaching that our souls have been infested with invisible spirits known as "Thetans" by the alien emperor Xenu.
and it's true we dont see John Travolta being hassled, that's because he's not a giant dickhead like Tom Cruise.
a true story: a friend of mine was invited by another friend to a christian group, to talk about the bible and w/e. she was new there and nobody knew her. a girl sitting in front of her turned around and said straight to her face "what are you doing here? you're going to hell" plain and simple that person was a cunt.
a good question to ask your self is; do you blame the person for being that way or do you blame the religion?

where were you to stick up for them when they needed you? or do you only extend those rights to moviestars :ice:

Ok Simon you know where i work so this comes from expeirence. People need to take their medications when they have been diagnosed with certain mental health disorders. it is very important!! trust me on this! people such as tom cruise are sometimes idolized and his followers will do anything that they hear from their "idol". how many women may suffer from post-partum depression and think that medication isn't nessecary because soemone like tom (who has never had a baby or suffered post partum depression) says not to take it. did you hear about the woman in Texas who murdered her 5 children because of PPD? happens way to often.
and since when does the church rule you medical decsisions?
sorry i am a little hot on the PPD issue. i just got home from 12 hours working with a PPD woman who did indeed kill her baby. if she would have had the proper medication, possibly the baby could have been saved :(

Beli that is so sad and as a mother of three children I am so glad I didn't suffer any PPD other than the usual blues from the hormone swing for a week or so after. Tom and Scientology's stance on depression , psychiatry etc is, IMO dangerous. No one other than a qualified doctor should tell people whether they need specific drugs or not. My Ex suffers from hypermania and I have witnessed first hand how horrible it is when he habitully refuses to take medication. I'd like to see Tom sodding Cruise tell him when he is hyper or in the bowels of depression that some vitamins and sunshine would sort him out.

Working at a clinic I have seen many people die who refused to take their medication... I also studied Psych so don't fucking tell me medication is not needed.
Simon, I just wanted to touch on your point where you said "it's not hurting anybody" ... they believe they should leave their baby alone for whatever length of time... Did that baby choose the religion? No, it's being forced upon him. Who knows what that can do to a baby's psyche.

just because thats the religion doesnt mean believers follow it to the letter
example:
arabs at home are forbidden to booze, sex, gamble etc etc
they come to UK and its drunken, drugged up parties at casino's with hookers for afters
example: Christianity is evolving as time changes now matter wot the bible orignally said.....female clergy for one, divorces are now "allowed" to re marry etc
dont think i need any further examples
