Easy fix:
for Vista users, here are instructions on how to edit the HOSTS file: http://geekswithblogs.net/thibbard/archive/2006/12/13/ChangingYourHostsFileInVista.aspx
for XP/2000 users:
open the HOSTS file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc in a text editor (notepad)
after the last line (which is probably '127.0.0.1 localhost') add the following 6 lines:
127.0.0.1 rad.msn.com #user edit - MSN Adclient DLL
127.0.0.1 arc1.msn.com #user edit - MSN Adclient DLL
127.0.0.1 arc2.msn.com #user edit - MSN Adclient DLL
127.0.0.1 arc3.msn.com #user edit - MSN Adclient DLL
127.0.0.1 arc4.msn.com #auser edit - MSN Adclient DLL
127.0.0.1 arc5.msn.com #user edit - MSN Adclient DLL
Save the file.
Restart Messenger.
No more ads (h)
(rad.msn.com, arc1.msn.com etc are sites/servers where the msn ads are hosted...
The lines that you add into the HOSTS file tell any program which wants to contact those sites (ie messenger when it wants to display ads to you) to look for them on your own computer instead of accessing the actual locations on the internet.)
I take no responsibility for anything bad or otherwise happening as a result of implementing the above fix!
