My dilemma...*sigh*

I have three old computers...two are pre2k and not functioning *atm* It is quite likely that all three are pre2k, but I got this one used and have no idea. It works. I use the working one currently. I recently "inherited" a fourth computer that is newer than the others, and even has added memory, but I'm afraid to use it for fear that someone might screw it up. I have a guy that will get the other two up and running if possible.

I also recently acquired a brand new Compaq Presario Notebook from a contest at hubby's work. (C551NR)

I want to keep some of the information that is on the oldest two computers if I can retrieve it. I would like to take some of what is on this computer, and that other information and transfer the data to either the fourth computer, or to my new laptop. From the laptop I can burn onto CD anything I feel needs to follow me throughout all of my potential computer upgrades without the difficulty I am currently facing. I can't recall if the fourth computer has a burner or not. I don't really want to bog down the fourth computer, but I don't even know if my laptop can handle all of the information. I suspect it has better memory and such than the others combined...barring the "extra memory" added to the fourth.

I will probably delegate the fourth computer for myself, and keep this one for the kids to screw up. I need to know my best course of action to complete the aforementioned tasks. Can this all be done by networking my computers somehow? If so, how does one do this? If not, are there any other suggestions?

I also do not want to part with the other computers until all personal information is stripped from them. I would like to know how to "deep clean" them.

HELP! Please. I am SOooo lost.

The easiest way to move the information would be to use a USB Memory Stick.. I'm sure even as old as these computers are they all have a USB plug on them. This would make transfering data between machines easiest. Honestly programs can be replaced but its the documents, music and images that are the most important but luckily the easiest to move.

As for the Hard Drives.. put them in the microwave.. that should do the trick :-) But seriously there are some applications out there that will do that for you, some you can even run from a boot CD.

Thank you for the advice Dy...yes, all have the USB ports. *shock*
Apparently I also have a transfer feature for files and such via Windows on the new laptop. *woohoo*
Not yet sure how it works, but will check it out.
