**The player to have scored the most goals in a single World Cup is the Frenchman, Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals at Sweden '58.

**The only player to have won three World Cups is the Brazilian Pelé. Also, Brazil is the only country to have participated in every World Cup.

**In 1966, the World Cup trophy was stolen while the event was being celebrated in England. Scotland Yard immediately got to work, and offered a six thousand pound reward to whoever found it. And guess who did? Pickles, a black and white terrier — the most famous dog in the history of the World Cup.

**Since 1974, the FIFA World Cup that is presented to the winner every four years was designed by the Italian sculptor Amadeo Gazziniga. The original trophy, the "Jules Rimet Cup," designed by the French sculptor Abel Lefleur, is currently in Brazil, where it has been since 1974, when Brazil won the World Cup for the third time.

**Up to date, there have been 17 World Cups, but only seven countries have won the trophy. Brazil has won it five times, but ironically, never in their home country.

The Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen again in 1983 in Rio de Janiero - it has never been recovered.

Pickles, the dog that found the trophy in 1966, died a year later from hanging after chasing after a cat and his choke chain got caught in a tree.

England never wears blue in the World Cup anymore because they got beaten by the vast underdogs of America in the (circa) '56 World Cup.

The largest crowd to watch a World Cup game live are the 199,850 people who crammed into a stadium in Brazil for a game between Brazil and Uruguay during the 1950 World Cup.

The smallest crowd to watch a World Cup game was the 300 who showed up to the game between Romania and Peru during the 1930 World Cup of soccer in Uruguay.

Chile managed to reach the semi-finals of the 1962 World Cup before losing 4-2 to Brazil. On their way they beat Switzerland, USSR and Italy. Players said they ate Swiss cheese to beat the Swiss, spaghetti to beat Italy, drank vodka to beat USSR, and tried coffee to beat Brazil - but coffee obviously didn't agree with them.

The winners of the world cup never take home the 24 karrot solid gold trophy, instead they take a replica.

The 2006 FIFA World Cup will be the first tournament in 20 years to use a predominently black and white ball, with previous tournaments using cream, duck egg and yellow coloured balls
