We're already looking for alternative fuel sources. I believe diesel is starting to be used again in Europe, which is easier, and cheaper to process. Those crafty Germans I believe have a cleaner, more efficient diesel engine that is also quieter. The world is not going to run out of oil for a long time because we will progress and find new ways to get what we want.

how many problems urban Americans (like here in New York) could've solved if they rode short distnace trips (<30 miles one way) on bicycles:

1. fuel costs
2. air pollution
3. obesity
4. road congestion
5. time (yes, its actually faster to go by bike than by car if you include the time it takes to find a parking spot in a place like Manhattan. I won't even mention rush hour traffic)

its a matter of supply and demand. if no one wants it, the price will drop eventually. walk more and carpool or use public transportation. I walk to work and i pull my 2 yr old in a wagon behind. general rule of thumb for me is, walk if i can get there in less than 30 minutes, otherwise take the bus, and the bus stop is a 25 minute walk

but unfortunately as long as ppl pull up to the pumps and fill their SUV or hummer, and dont find alternative ways to conserve then the demand will remain.

diesel is starting to be used again in europe? here are some facts for you: 65% of the produced cars over here in germany come with a diesel engine. this is something the americans miss to notice, diesel engines are a lot more efficient than petrol engines. They come with more torque and they consume less fuel which is also cheaper. talking about gas prices, the gallon costs more than $7 (USD) which isn't a temporary peak. however, diesel isn't going to solve our problem: oil deposits are limited.
there is no doubt that the majority of cars will be powered by either diesel or petrol for the next 20 years. efficiency will improve constantly, but in accordance to the situation we have to find a different concept sooner or later.

what options are there?
  • bio-pretrol such as ethanol for instance gained from plants. with a few minor modifications to a regular diesel engine, it's already possible these days to run it with rape oil. question is how big the plantages are supposed to be to supply the oil demand and more important where is the space that comes with the environmental conditions that we need?
  • natural gas (compressed or liquid). i got a seperate gas tank in my bmw to run it either with natral gas or regular petrol. it takes minor changes to the car, but the weight certainly increases which slightly increases the fuel consumption. a big problem is the supply of natural gas. it might become a bit tricky to find a petrol station that offers natural gas though. over here, we do have about 5k stations that provide the special gas you want.
  • hydrogen. the big problem with this option is that it's quite ineffecient to produce. i've read an article the other day at work about a team of scientists that used solar to cover the energy requirement that's needed during the production process. they worked for more than 5 years on this project and the bottom line was "solar without hydrogen would have been more efficient.".
  • electricity. good news, it causes no direct emissions and the engines are relatively quiet. bad news, the emissions are shifted to the power plants (unless nuclear) and the cars would be quite heavy due to the massive batteries. depending on the batteries, the recycling might be another problem that needs to be discussed.
  • (hydrogen) fuel cells is the most advanced option of all. however, there are a few problems. first of all it's the high cost of making reliable fuel cells that would provide electric power in a hydrogen car. secondly, if paired with hydrogen the current gasoline fueling system would need to be replaced or expanded in order to cover the hydrogen demand.
  • milk and water. who says we need a car in the first place? don't forget to get your daily amount of calcium and either walk or use a bicycle.

The thing about america is that everything is so spread out. not every place is a sprawling city, most of it is very rural and walking or taking a bike would be out of the question. until very recently my town dident even have public transportation, and actually from where i live, the bus stop is atleast 15 miles away.

as for me, i drive a V8 GMC sierra...gas is around 280, and as long as i can afford it i dont care. me changing my lifestyle isent going to affect anything, because no one else is going to change...the only way gas will go down is when the Global demand goes down...maybe when japan or china hit a depression.

What are we going to do?

Nothing, We'll be dead when that shit runs out, Mostly

For those of us that live to be 100 or older, We might start seeing shit run out by then, Most places will have expanded enough to ride a bike/walk, 15 miles Cowboy? You can't ride 15 miles? Geez, Talk about unfit

Get off yer lazy asses and stop trying to find solutions to a problem that isn't even a problem, I rekon it'll improve the world when oil goes bye bye
